Labor Day

I hope you’re enjoying your long weekend. I am practicing gratitude for all the workers who fought hard so that we could enjoy a two day weekend (among other things). Weekends are a time to catch up on housework and yard work and all the things we don’t manage to get done during the busy workweek. They are also a time to rest.

Yin and yang energies come to mind when I think about how we spend our time. We are busy and active in yang and restful in yin. It’s all about balance. I know the American way is to work hard and be busy, but you’re not going to feel very balanced in life if you don’t take time to rest.

Based on what I’ve seen as a yoga teacher, I know some people do not know how to relax. This is a real problem. In fact, I myself did not always know how to relax. I used to think that putting my feet up and watching TV was relaxation. Let’s call that more of a zoning out. I’m talking about real, deep relaxation – the kind of relaxation we do at the end of a yoga practice (savasana).

There are lots of different types of relaxation you can do: progressive muscle relaxation, Tai Chi, body scan, breath focus, yoga nidra, mindfulness meditation, etc. I want to share with you a link to a yoga nidra practice. This is by Sreedevi Bringi, my yoga nidra teacher. I hope you will take the time to practice some relaxation and perhaps listen to this track.

Happy Labor Day!
