Performance Yoga

Confession time: I’ve spent much of my morning trying to get out a yoga video for you. I picked up around my house, took the dogs on a long walk so they’d be too tired to bother me during filming (anyone who has any experience with a German Shepherd puppy knows how absolutely laughable this notion is), put more makeup on than I usually wear, and sat uncomfortably in front of the camera trying to teach (after having to admonish the dog for barking because who are you talking to mom?!). The whole process felt very much like a performance.

Now, if you’ve been practicing yoga, you know that our practice is about moving inward. It’s about quieting the mind to find our inner peace and bliss. I’m really on the fence about this for many reasons. I understand that not everyone has access to yoga for various reasons and I’d really like to change that. On the other hand, many yoga teachers spend thousands and thousands of dollars (seriously) on their education and I don’t want to devalue their work by giving yoga away for free. There’s also the issue of karma yoga- giving without expectations and living a life of service, something that is very important to me.

I also don’t want to diminish the work that many yoga teachers have done to make yoga accessible online. I’m very grateful to them. If you haven’t had a chance to go to any actual yoga class, I encourage you to do so. There is a lot you will get at an actual yoga class that you simply cannot get online. Check your local studio’s schedule- if money is an issue for you, there are lots of places that offer free or donation based community yoga classes. Perhaps I need to meditate more (and talk to my husband who has some experience in video production). I value your input. What do you think?
“No! Bad dog!”
