Prana Vayus

Prana what? Let’s back up a little. Let’s take a look at the physical and energetic experiences of the body. Obviously the physical body can be experienced through the senses. These senses allow us to experience the world in a very tangible way. However, they are not required. Let’s say for instance that we lose our sight or hearing. Our lives will still continue. Even if we lost our minds in the sense that we are no longer conscious, as in a coma, our bodies will still be alive. But, if we lose our ability to breathe, to take in prana, our life force, we are no longer able to sustain life.

Prana has many meanings, from breath to the energy of consciousness. When we learn to control our breath, we can quiet our mind to attune to our consciousness and attain samadhi, or bliss. Here, we understand the movement of our pranas and how they sustain us. The key to health is keeping these pranic systems in balance, which is something we work at in our yogic practice through certain poses, relaxation, breathing practices, meditation, and the choices we make off the mat.
